KNX vs Crestron vs Savant: Which Home Automation System Is Right for You?
If you are planning a luxury home or high-end commercial space and have done even a little research, you have probably encountered three names: KNX, Crestron, and Savant. All three are world-class systems trusted by integrators globally. But they are built differently, priced differently, and suited to different kinds of projects. This guide breaks down each one honestly.
What Is KNX?
KNX is an open international standard (ISO/IEC 14543) for home and building automation. It uses a dedicated twisted-pair bus cable to connect every device — light switches, dimmers, sensors, blinds, HVAC actuators, alarms — into one unified wired backbone. Because it is an open standard, over 500 manufacturers produce KNX-certified products, and any KNX-certified device from any brand can talk to any other.
KNX originated in Europe and dominates the commercial and luxury residential segments there. It is increasingly the choice of architects and developers in India, the Middle East, and Asia for any project where long-term reliability and the ability to upgrade components independently matters.
The programming is done using ETS (Engineering Tool Software), which is manufacturer-independent. This means that if your original integrator is unavailable, any other KNX certified integrator in the world can open the project and work on it — you are never locked in.
What Is Crestron?
Crestron is an American company that makes its own proprietary hardware and software ecosystem. It is regarded as one of the gold standards in high-end AV control, boardrooms, hospitality, and luxury residential automation. Crestron's strength is in user experience — its touch panels, apps, and control interfaces are refined and polished.
The trade-off: Crestron is a closed ecosystem. Every component — the processor, keypads, dimmers, and interfaces — must be Crestron branded. Programming requires a Crestron-certified programmer, and even small changes to the system typically require the original integrator. The hardware cost is premium, and the programming cost is significant.
Crestron is the default choice for high-end hospitality (five-star hotels, large resorts), corporate boardrooms, and ultra-luxury residences where the owner has an ongoing relationship with an AV integrator and budget is not the primary constraint.
What Is Savant?
Savant is an American luxury home automation brand founded in 2005. It positions itself above Crestron in the residential market, with exceptional industrial design — keypads and remotes that look like luxury objects — and deep Apple ecosystem integration. Savant runs on Apple hardware and uses iOS as its native platform.
Like Crestron, Savant is a closed proprietary system. Components must be Savant-branded. Programming is highly specialised. The per-room cost is typically higher than Crestron. Savant's sweet spot is the ultra-luxury residence — think penthouse apartments, luxury villas, and private estates — where the owner values premium aesthetics and seamless Apple integration above all else.

The Evoto View
As a KNX certified integrator, we are naturally biased toward KNX — but our bias is informed. For 90% of residential and commercial projects in India, KNX delivers better long-term value than either Crestron or Savant. It is more flexible, more maintainable, and more scalable. The remaining 10% — typically ultra-luxury residences where the client specifically wants Crestron's AV finesse or Savant's aesthetic — are cases where we refer to our trusted network of dealers for those brands.
The right answer depends on your project, your priorities, and your long-term relationship with your integrator. If you are unsure, come to our Experience Centre in Chandigarh and see what a real KNX installation looks and feels like.
